Functional Vision - What it means to "see"

When most people think about vision, they think about eyesight.

Can you read the letters on the chart?
Are you short-sighted or long-sighted?
Do you need glasses?
But vision is much more than how clearly the eyes see.
Functional vision is how a person uses their vision in everyday life.
It’s not just about what the eyes detect — it’s about how the brain understands, organises and responds to what is seen.
And for many children and adults with developmental or neurological differences, this is where things can become challenging.
Stacking Blocks - not so simple!
Take stacking blocks, for example. For some, it might seem like such a simple task.
This, however, is a huge neurological task.
Just "seeing" the blocks isn't enough.
To stack the blocks visually, the brain must:

See the pile of blocks
Separate it from background
Recognise that the pile isn't ONE big object and understand that it is made up of individual blocks
Understand the shape and orientation of blocks
Judge depth, contrast and alignment
Coordinate eyes and hands
Predict balance
... and then there's a tower.
What appears simple on the outside is actually a highly coordinated visual–neurological task.
Eyesight vs Functional Vision
A standard eye test checks:
Eye health
Visual acuity (clarity)
Prescription needs
But functional vision looks at:
Can the person find an object in a busy space?
Can they recognise something when it’s out of context?
Do they visually track moving objects?
How do lighting, colour, and contrast affect them?
Do crowded environments cause overwhelm?
Does vision fluctuate when it's noisy, when unwell or tired, or when it's hot and humid?
Someone can have perfectly healthy eyes — and still struggle to use vision effectively.
We All Experience Changes in Visual Processing
Fluctuations with functional vision isn't limitted to only those with neurological conditions.
All of us experience changes in how well we process visual information, depending on the situation.
Vision is not fixed.
It’s dynamic.
It’s influenced by context, stress, fatigue, and complexity.

Think about driving on a clear, sunny afternoon.

Now compare that to:
Heavy rain on the windscreen
Glare from headlights in the dark
Wet roads reflecting light
Fast-moving traffic

Suddenly:
Judging distance feels harder
Lane markings are less clear
You lean forward and concentrate more
Your body feels tense
You turn off music to see better.
→ Your eyes are still healthy. But the processing demand has increased.
Reading in a quiet vs loud environment🤫 / 🔊

When you’re reading in a quiet room, it feels manageable.
Your brain:
Focuses on the words
Tracks each line smoothly
Filters out minor distractions
Processes meaning with ease
The environment contributes to making reading an easy, enjoyable process.
Now imagine trying to read while:
Kids are crying - the TV is loud.
Music with catchy vocals is playing.
People are talking excitedly beside you.

Your eyesight hasn’t changed.
Suddenly you are:
Re-reading the same sentence
Losing your place
Struggling to concentrate
Feeling irritated or overwhelmed
Driving home vs somewhere new 🏠 /📍🗺️

When you drive a familiar route, you barely think about it. It can be automatic, effortless.
Your brain:
Predicts turns
Anticipates traffic lights
Knows where hazards are
Have you ever arrived home with no recollection of how you got there?
Now imagine driving somewhere unfamiliar.

You are:
Reading signs carefully
Watching for landmarks
Listening closely to directions
Driving slower as you approach your destination
Keeping music is quieter or off.
Conversations are light to reduce distractions.
Have you ever ended a phone call because you just couldn’t concentrate on finding a parking spot?
The visual system is working much harder. Again, your eyesight hasn’t changed.
Everyday tasks while under the influence, on strong medications, or unwell 🍷/ 💊/🤢
Under such conditions, we may experience:

Reduced depth perception
Slower reaction time
Difficulty maintaining balance
Trouble focusing on details
Again — the eyes haven’t changed.
But the brain’s ability to process visual input has.
What This Tells Us
Vision is not just about eyesight. Seeing begins in the brain.

It’s about how efficiently the brain:
Filters information
Prioritises what matters
Integrates vision with movement
Manages competing sensory input
When visual demand increases, performance can decrease — even in healthy adults.
For individuals with functional vision challenges, that “high-demand” feeling can happen in everyday environments:

Busy classrooms
Cluttered playrooms
Shopping centres
Sudden changes in routines
New places
Group activities
What feels mildly inconvenient for some can feel overwhelming or disorienting for others.
