Functional vision assessments

An eye test checks how well the eyes are working. A functional vision assessment looks at something different: how the brain uses what the eyes see, during the moments that matter to you, like playtime, mealtimes, the shops or the park.

Everyone is different, so we plan the visits together, at a pace that suits you.

FOR CHILDREN

Play-based, wherever your child feels at home

An eye test usually asks a child to talk, sit still and follow instructions. My assessments don't need any of that. Your child doesn't have to speak, sit still or "perform" for me.

Instead, I follow your child's lead in the sandpit, at the playground or on the lounge room floor. I watch how they play: which toys they reach for again and again, and which ones they pass by. If something new feels unsure, we try it on you or their teddy first.

Play first.

Can they spot the ducks on the other side of the pond?

Do they reach for the marble but pass by anything smaller?

Can they pick out sticks from this busy patch of pebbles, where everything is a similar colour?

When your child is happy to join in, I also use formal vision tests. They're one piece of the picture. My clinical opinion draws on everything I see along the way, from the sandpit to the pond.

No single test tells the whole story. Every small moment helps build the bigger picture of how your child sees their world.

FOR ADULTS

Your everyday life, your way

You know your vision better than anyone. We start with a conversation about what you notice day to day: the places that feel easy, the places that take more energy, and what you'd like to understand better.

Then I join you in your own routines, like making a cuppa, shopping, catching up with friends or getting around your neighbourhood. Your loved ones and the people who support you are welcome to tag along and share their insights.

At home

Can you find the mug on a busy bench, or the remote on a patterned couch?

Out and about

How do you find a friend's face in a busy café, or spot the step at the end of a path?

Through the day

Does your vision feel different in the afternoon, or when you’re tired?

Vision can change after a stroke or brain injury, or it may always have worked this way for you. Either way, together we build a clear picture of how you see your world, and with your permission I share it with the people who support you.
